The quake was detected between the islands of Amorgos and Santorini at 9.09pm local time (7.09pm GMT), with its epicentre believed to be a depth of 5km. The country has been rattled by more than 200 undersea earthquakes in recent days.
In the wake of the seismic activity, more than 11,000 people have fled Santorini, with 7,000 leaving by ferry and 4,000 by air, according to the BBC. Schools on Santorini and neighbouring islands such as Anafi, Paros, Naxos and Mykonos are set to remain shut until Friday.
Greece’s local weather and civil safety minister, Vassilis Kikilias, has stated Specialist firefighters, canine groups and a cell operations centre have been dispatched to Santorini, whereas helicopters are on standby.
