Dog treats comprised of lab-grown rooster have gone on sale at a UK pet retailer in what’s being claimed as a world first.
The meals, developed by Meatly, combines plant-based substances with cultivated meat – made by rising a single pattern of cells from a rooster egg.
The agency says the deal with, known as Chick Bites, comprises all of the important amino acids, vital fatty acids, minerals and nutritional vitamins wanted for pet well being and claims it’s “just as tasty and nutritious as traditional chicken breast”.
Pets at Home believes it’s the first firm on the planet to promote cultivated meat for pet meals which is produced by rising cells, and doesn’t require the elevating or slaughter of animals.
Meatly founding chief government Owen Ensor stated: “It’s a giant leap forward, toward a significant market for meat which is healthy, sustainable and kind to our planet and other animals.”
But the corporate, whose largest investor contains Pets at Home, has competitors from rivals eager to take advantage of a requirement from pet homeowners for extra sustainable substances.
Austrian-American start-up BioCraft has been growing cultivated mouse meat for canines and cats.
Part of the problem for these firms has been that the method is pricey and sophisticated, delaying getting merchandise to market.
In May 2024, BioCraft claimed it had managed to slash prices and plans to launch its pet meals by early 2026.
Meanwhile, in February 2024, US agency Hill’s Pet Nutrition stated it had been collaborating with producer Bond Pet Foods to “formulate test products”.

Researchers have spent years growing alternate options to animal proteins from conventional livestock farming, which is linked to local weather change, biodiversity loss, and water air pollution.
