Robbie Williams Celebrates Eric Morecambe’s Legacy with Auction Win
A Milestone Purchase by a Renowned Singer
Robbie Williams, the renowned pop artist, expressed his joy through social media after successfully bidding on a pair of Eric Morecambe’s iconic glasses and pipe at auction. Reflecting on the thrill of his victory, he described shedding “happy, childlike tears” upon securing these treasured items from television history.
Auction of Comedy Memorabilia
This remarkable auction took place in January and showcased an extensive collection of personal belongings from the legendary comedian Eric Morecambe’s former residence, Brachefield in Harpenden, Hertfordshire. The imitation tortoiseshell Metzler glasses alongside Morecambe’s signature pipe were expected to fetch between £2,000 to £4,000 but astonishingly sold for an impressive £20,000.
Celebrating Milestones and Nostalgia
Marking his upcoming 51st birthday with this purchase was not just a gesture for Williams; it symbolized a deeper connection to the comedy icon. He humorously recounted discussing their children’s inheritance with his wife Ayda Field as the bidding escalated—a remark she dismissed during their conversation.
In reflecting on what Morecambe meant to him personally, Williams stated: “I guess we all need friends-we-never-meet from off the telly. Eric has always been mine—an uncle of sorts.”
Bidding From Afar: A Modern Experience
Due to work commitments in Los Angeles at the time of bidding—which began just before he was set to board a plane—Williams entrusted one member of his team as “chief bidder.” His wife encouraged him through doubts during the live auction streaming that captivated him throughout its duration.
“Eric,” he continued emotionally on social media post-win. “You were and are simply unmatched.”
An Iconic Partnership Remembered
Morecambe’s illustrious career began when he partnered with Ernie Wise at just 14 years old during World War II; despite their separation due to wartime circumstances, they rejoined forces to form an unforgettable comedy duo. The pair had numerous early struggles before achieving success on television platforms like ITV and BBC. By 1977, their Christmas special amassed a staggering audience of 28 million viewers—a testament to their popularity during an era when TV options were limited.
Eric Morecambe passed away prematurely at age 58 due to heart failure in 1984; following his late wife’s passing earlier this year at age 97, their daughter’s initiative aimed at allowing fans access proved significant both personally and financially.
Gail Stuart shared her sentiments about honoring her father’s legacy through this avenue: “When mum died it felt like closure for us—and now we’re able to share some cherished memories while receiving overwhelming messages about what fans acquired.”
This sale included over 800 items once belonging to Morecambe himself—a fitting salute that enhances both nostalgia among fans and connection across generations.
