Man Pursues Legal Access to Landfill in Bid to Recover Lost Bitcoin
A computer engineer based in Newport is engaged in a legal battle to secure rights to a landfill site where he believes a significant stash of Bitcoin may be located.
James Howells insists that his former partner inadvertently discarded a hard drive containing an astonishing total of roughly £620 million worth of bitcoins back in the year 2013.
Howells attempted to take Newport’s local council to court either for permission to search the landfill situated on Docks Way or for £495 million as compensation. However, his case has been dismissed by the judiciary.
The local authority is currently slated to shut down the landfill by the financial year beginning in March of 2025. They also have plans approved for constructing a solar power facility on this site which aims at powering their new waste collection vehicles.
“The council’s intent to close this landfill so soon came as quite an unexpected development,” remarked Howells. “They previously claimed during proceedings at the High Court that allowing me access would negatively impact residents; yet they’re moving ahead with plans for closure regardless.”
The current volume of waste buried within this landfill exceeds over 1.5 million tonnes, and Howells believes that approximately 100 thousand tonnes could conceal his lost hard drive within its depths.
Consideration of Purchasing the Site
“I have discussed purchasing options with my investment associates recently; it’s certainly something we are contemplating seriously,” shared Howells.

Appeal Against Judicial Ruling
Howells is also considering appealing against Judge Keyser’s ruling which led him being unable pursue this matter further. The Judge indicated there was insufficient basis for making any claims and indicated no substantial chance success existed should it proceed trial right now due lapse since incident occurred connecting disposal hard drive.
