Saaed Salem’s eyes full of tears as he surveyed the stays of his north Gaza neighbourhood on a freezing February morning. He was resting in a chair that had someway survived the warfare, surrounded by grandchildren and rubble, his hope for the longer term and the ruins of his previous.

His household had misplaced one dwelling in 1948, after they fled Hirbiya village, now the location of Zikim kibbutz inside Israel, to flee shelling and studies of atrocities by Israeli forces.
