Behind the Scenes at the Auction
“I kept running back to my wife Ayda asking her what I should do,” he recounted. “‘Keep bidding,’ she encouraged me with an unwavering confidence akin to someone charging into an electronics sale on Black Friday.”
An Emotional Connection
Upon successfully acquiring the memorabilia, tears of happiness filled Robbie’s eyes. He reflected on how figures like Eric Morecambe serve a unique role in people’s lives—providing companionship through their artistry despite never having met personally. “Eric has always been mine,” he wrote warmly.
“Deep down inside me, Eric Morecambe’s essence has acted as soothing balm. I wish to evoke similar feelings in those around me,” Williams expressed sentimentally about his connection with Morecambe’s legacy and humor.
The Auction: A Tribute Over 40 Years Later
The distinctive imitation tortoiseshell glasses crafted by Metzler are synonymous with Morecambe’s razor-sharp wit and comedic identity. They were auctioned alongside his Barling briar pipe and two cherished black-and-white images capturing him adorned in those very spectacles.
This notable auction took place on January 10 and 11 at Hanson Auctioneers over four decades since Morecambe passed away due to heart failure at just 58 years old in 1984. In total, over 700 lots comprising various memorabilia related to this beloved entertainer were made available during this memorable event.
