In a disheartening turn of events, Senator Martin Conway has officially resigned from the Fine Gael party amid uproar over a recent incident in Dublin. The politician was apprehended by law enforcement while allegedly “drunk and on all fours,” an event that unfolded on O’Connell Street during the early hours of January 22.
Following speculation about an undisclosed politician linked to the unusual behavioral arrest, Senator Conway made a public statement where he expressed his remorse about the situation. He admitted to consuming alcohol mixed with sleeping tablets prior to the occurrence.
The senator’s statement elaborated on his experience as he recounted: “In the early hours of Tuesday, January 22nd, I was taken into custody by An Garda Síochána due to my intoxicated state stemming from sleeping medications and alcohol consumption.”
“After being detained at Store Street Garda Station for several hours without formal charges pressed against me.”
Senator Conway admitted that he had failed to inform his party leadership about this incident before announcing his resignation.
“This matter wasn’t disclosed ahead of time,” he clarified. “I wish to offer my sincerest apologies to my family members, colleagues in Parliament and supporters as well as Vision Ireland who nominated me.”
‘In reflecting on my actions,’ he continued,’ I realize I’ve fallen short of standards expected of me. My apologies also extend to the officers involved for their required intervention in this matter.’
“As such, I have submitted my resignation from Fine Gael’s Parliamentary Group and recognize that disciplinary measures are likely forthcoming.” p >
